Travel through Brazilian cooperativism

About

At 551 kilometers from Florianópolis, in the state of Santa Catarina, the city of Chapecó shows the strength of cooperatives in one of the largest industrial conglomerates in Brazil: the Aurora  Food Cooperative Center.

Born in 1969, when 18 leaders representing eight cooperatives in western Santa Catarina, decided to establish a central cooperative to improve the conditions of farmers in the region and acquire market space. It worked, and almost 45 years later, the cooperative became a world reference in meat processing technology, covering the market for pork, poultry, dairy and pizzas. There are more than 650 products.

Aurora brings together 12 individual cooperatives, which together represent more than 60 thousand farmers. Among the companies in the meat business, Aurora is the third most referenced brand in Brazil.

Its structure has industrial units for processing of pigs and poultry, feed factories, dairy industry and farms, and a unit for disseminating genes, commercial units and 100,000 sales points throughout the country.
